More information
Climate change could see Queensland experience increased droughts, more severe storms and rising ocean levels that could radically change our coastline.
What is the Queensland Government doing?
The Queensland Government is committed to
- tackling the climate change challenge through policy and programs that are contemporary and informed by the latest science and policy developments; and
- working in partnership with industry, business and the community to implement responses that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build resilience to climate change impacts.
Strategies of action
The Queensland Government is serious about responding to climate change, and has committed to making an equitable contribution towards the national target of 60 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The Queensland Government has two climate change strategies of action:
- ClimateSmart 2050 establishes Queensland's long term climate change goals and provides a platform for the Government, community and industry to move to a low carbon future. It i ncludes initiatives in: e nergy, industry, community, planning and building, primary industries, transport, adaptation, and government leadership
The Queensland Government is currently reviewing ClimateSmart 2050 . The Review will build on the suite of greenhouse gas reduction measures contained in the original ClimateSmart strategy, and will outline additional measures across all sectors of the economy to contribute to achieving the national target of a 60 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions below 2000 levels by 2050
ClimateSmart Adaptation 2007–12 (PDF, 661 kB) is Queensland’s plan for increasing our resilience to the potential impacts of climate change. Under the plan, government and business are required to consider the potential effects of climate change when they make decisions about: water planning and services, agriculture, human settlement, natural environment and landscape, emergency services and human health, tourism, business and industry, finance and insurance.
