Bathroom
We are all aware of the importance of conserving water. Those of us in drought affected areas, would never leave a tap running to shave or clean our teeth.
But did you know that almost a third of the greenhouse gas emissions from your home comes from heating water?
We use a lot of hot water in our bathrooms. And we waste a lot of electricity too with heaters and exhaust fans.
By making some easy choices in the bathroom we can cut heaps of greenhouse gas emissions.
Simple things you can do today
- Shower in 4 minutes or under
- Open a window instead of using your exhaust fan if possible
- Switch on your bathroom heater only when you really need it
- Fix any dripping taps
- Use the half-flush option on the toilet
- Use toilet paper made from recycled paper
- Clean your bathroom with natural products rather than harsh chemicals
- If you have towel heaters, turn them off after they have done their job
Long-term actions
- Seal gaps under doors and around windows to keep heat in during cold periods
- Install low flow fixtures such as a sink aerator and a water efficient shower head
- Consider purchasing a solar hot water system to replace your old hot water system
- Keep hot water pipe runs as short as possible to minimise heat loss from pipes
