Dishwashers

Look at the star ratings! A four star dishwasher is more than two times cheaper to run and uses up to 40% less water than a one and a half star rated dishwasher.

AAA water rated dishwasherAbout 30% of households in Australia own a dishwasher. Dishwashers are generally used between four and seven times per week, although this varies for each household .

When purchasing a dishwasher, each energy star equates to about a 30% reduction in power usage.

A dishwasher with a good range of programs, including economy options, will allow you to match the dishwasher's performance to your needs and help you save energy, water and the environment.

You should only use your dishwasher with a full load. If you need to wash a few dishes, wash them by hand.

Getting the most out of your Dishwasher

  • Run the dishwasher only when it's full.
  • Wash large items by hand. This will leave more room in the dishwasher for other items.
  • Don't rinse dishes in hot running water before you put them in the dishwasher - most dishwashers can cope with dishes that are not rinsed at all. If you have to rinse (i.e. to remove milk that will be left for some time prior to washing), use cold water. Also, use a plug when rinsing dishes to reduce the amount of water used.
  • Clean the filter of your dishwasher regularly. This will help to keep the dishwasher working at maximum capacity, which in turn will make your dishes cleaner.
  • Use the most economical program that gives you a satisfactory wash result - with the lowest temperature or shortest running time.
  • Use economy drying options if available, or try eliminating power drying altogether (most machines have this setting). If your machine allows it, open the door after the final rinse cycle is completed to assist with air drying while the load is still hot.

Always refer to manufacturer’s instructions.

How to...Purchase an efficient dishwasher

  • Make sure you check the energy and water rating labels before you buy.
  • An extra energy star can save around 30% more energy. An extra water star uses 15% less water. Over the life of your dishwasher, this can add up!

Work out the best size for your needs. Generally, the larger the dishwasher, the greater the energy and water consumption. A model that is too large will waste water and energy; too small could mean that you need to run the dishwasher more often.
