Transport
Travel and transport
Make greener and smarter travel and transport choices and help reduce your carbon footprint by following these quick tips below.
Get active while reducing your carbon footprint!
- Where you can, substitute car journeys with other modes of transport such as public transport, cycling, walking or car pooling. It will save you money and also help your health!
Public transport
- Find out about special public transport services for major public events.
- Ask event and activity organisers to develop transport action plans—investigate group transport and low-energy transport options.
- Calculate your commuting greenhouse gas emissions using train travel with Queensland Rail’s travel calculator
Flying
- Take direct flights, rather than ones with frequent stopovers.
- Combine trips and have more meetings at one destination.
- Use public transport to and from airports.
- Offset your flight - most airlines now offer carbon offsetting for air travel.
- Consider avoiding air travel for business – use the phone, internet, post, or video-conferencing.
Car
- Reduce your car travel by at least one trip each week.
- Rid your car of unnecessary weight. You lose one per cent fuel efficiency for every extra 45 kg.
- Drive sensibly. Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes fuel.
- Reduce drag by placing items inside the car or boot rather than on roof racks. A loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel economy by five per cent.
- Use air conditioning only when necessary—open a window instead.
- Have your car serviced on a regular basis.
- Maintain your tyre pressure and inflate them to the recommended pressure.
- Consider new low consumption and low emissions options such as gas, diesel and hybrid cars for your next purchase.
- When choosing between vehicles, look for the vehicle with the lowest CO2 emissions on its fuel consumption label.
- Queensland motorists can help balance their vehicles’ emissions through a new vehicle offset contribution scheme – go to www.reversetheeffect.com.au (applicable for bikes, mopeds, small to large cars, hybrids and light commercial vehicles)
